In the episode, “Sunrise,” it begins with Juliana waking up in the middle of the night in a room, rented by Joe Blake, neither of them could sleep, and he offers to take her for a drive to watch the waterfall. They then return back to town, and Joe asks Juliana about if she has a husband. She then asks him what he is doing, and he says he is following his father’s footsteps. The café Joe and Juliana were supposed to visit posted a sign that they were hiring. She walks in to get a job.
The story then shifts to the family life of Obergruppenfurher Smith, as they have breakfast. Smith asks his son, Thomas, why he has his book open. They have a discussion about competing to beat a rebel at a test. Their discussion is in reference to their pride to their country as opposed to themselves. He then lets him study at the table. Joe calls Smith and they discuss a woman who is supposedly carrying cargo, which is Juliana.

An article I found that could relate to the theme of torture in this episode is called, "FBI wasn't able to unlock iPhone, even with a "fingerprint unlock warrant." In this article, a woman in Los Angeles, accused of identity theft was served a warrant to unlock her iPhone, which she claimed was not hers. Even though the warrant should not have stood because if you cannot get a warrant for an iPhone code, there should be no warrant for a finger press to unlock a phone; even when they pressed all ten of her fingers on the code button, the phone would not unlock. In this same case of torture and forceful nature, Frank was being pressured into telling about Juliana's ventures, which he really did not know much about, and they killed his sister and his kids in addition to his beatings. The only difference is that a warrant is a little more humane than what was done to Frank.

Analysis:
- Themes: Two themes in this episode are information extraction through torture and loss. When the Japanese take Frank, they beat him up and even kill his sister over the information on Juliana's whereabouts. The same thing happens in the Reich when the resistance tries to assassinate Smith and successfully assassinates Erich. Smith takes hold of one of the resistance members before they grab a gun and he brings him into custody where they beat him and drug him up for information. A sense of loss happens when Frank loses his sister, Laura and her kids, as well as when Juliana loses her sketch that Frank made. Could this mean change?
- Motif: The biggest motif in this story is Sunrise. The episode starts off with Juliana and Joe not being able to sleep, so they go near the waterfall to watch the sunrise. When they get back, the Sunrise cafe opens and puts a hiring sign. Juliana decides to get a job there. This is the cafe she was supposed to be at in place of Trudy. Another motif is the death that was either met or faced by many of these characters. Frank and Juliana almost got killed, and Frank's sister, Laura and her two children were killed.
- Symbols: A symbolic moment is when Juliana loses her image. This loss could symbolize that she may lose herself getting caught up with the resistance efforts she is participating in, especially that she almost met death. Just as she is losing herself, when Frank loses his sister and her kids, as well as being freed from execution, Frank may be transforming into someone different.
- Conflict: Juliana faces conflicts with figuring out who she was supposed to meet at the Sunrise cafe. Is Joe her contact? Or is it the man with the bible? Frank deals with the conflict of saving his sister, ratting Juliana out, or having himself killed. Joe is developing feelings for Juliana, where could this personal conflict lead to?
