I will begin with a rhetorical analysis before I give my response to this video, because it is important that we understand the message being presented in the video and the techniques that were used to produce it.
In the video above, they want you to understand the inequality between women and men. They use information to give a credibility (Ethos), logic (Logos), and an emotion (Pathos). Their purpose is to capture your attention to convey their message. They want you to feel this message which I will detail a little more, below.
Ethos (Credibility & Trust): In the video above, they used ethos to gain credibility and trust from you. They started off with a little girl who was behaving like a sweet princess. Throughout the video, they also used appeals. Such as when they said 1 out of 5 women get raped, they put five girls and showed to you what the ratio actually looks like. This can gain your credibility. They also asked why not teach boys not to rape instead of blaming the girls for their clothes.
Logos (Logic): To put logos or logic, they presented facts. One fact was about the grades both genders got in university. They stated that men who got a C in university earn the same amount as women who got an A in university. They then mentioned about rape. 1 in 5 women get raped. This is another fact to present logical information not to sound so biased.
Pathos (Emotion): The last point in the video to really grasp you was through the emotional appeal. The girls seemed angry. If the number of fucks used did not relay the anger, the moderate screaming tone certainly did. Their body language appeared to be stressed, and they did not have a smile on their face.
Now that we understand what the message was and the techniques they used to relay this message, I will put my response.
After watching the video the first time, I was mortified by the language. "Fuck" this, "motherfucking" that. I honestly felt like my ears ran away from me. I watched it a second time, and I took in the message more clearly after numbing to the foul language. I feel the cause that is being supported is presented well, the facts are very helpful into understanding what is going on. The video was very informative. At the same time, it was mortifying to hear kids so young using such language as fuck. To start, do they really understand the content that they are saying? I feel they are probably just finding this to be a party. I would have to say the youngest girl was maybe, 4? I feel it also disrespects women by using the language even though the purpose was to capture attention. Of course, we are NOT princesses. I do NOT need a prince to come "save" me, marry me, and load me up with money. I can make my own riches. I also agree that boys should be taught self control and should not rape. The video definitely has just cause. BUT, why all the "fucks?" The language is pretty trashy. Do I want to be remembered as someone who has a rotten mouth? NO. Of course, the targeted audience is for adults. Adults have children who may listen and feel it is okay. Realistically speaking, I hear kids outside using such profanity. That itself kills me. I could only imagine what would have happened to me if I used that profanity when I was that young. The content is TOO MATURE. The message is very confusing. It is unacceptable. In place, you could have had little girls wanting to achieve ACTUAL goals instead of swearing their heads off. Maybe even show a reaction to a young girl who is looking at the paycheck of a man and a woman working the same job in the same workplace. Why spoil the message? I was very disappointed. I can only imagine the stereotypes that will be made after adults watch that....IF they can even get through the whole video before thinking, "What the.....?"
Some questions I have now are, what are possible reasons that males commit rape? Is it because parents do not discuss "the talk" with their sons? Is it the taboo behavior about sex? Did parents just not teach morale to their sons?
