My writing processes are normally functional, but this semester was definitely a struggle. I am writing a fable that can sort of relate to how it went.
"There was once a Pacman master, and normally she can handle the little orbs that try to eat her, because they are predictable. She sets a plan from the beginning of the game so that she can achieve her goals. She knows how to avoid being stuck in the middle of the orbs and how to handle them as she collects all her pebbles for her character. One day, this Pacman master was having a really rough day, and to make it all worse, she reached a really tough level. The Pacman master was really happy she reached this special level, and she bragged like crazy. She even had a plan set out because she heard it can get out of hand. When she started the game, there were five monster orbs that were chasing her character, which was nothing. A few seconds after the game went on and her character was collecting the pebbles, more monster orbs started appearing. There were so many, she ended up losing her first life. After the loss of her first life, her computer froze. The level restarted and she tried to master this level again, before the monster orbs got to as much as they had been in the first level. She then got a little more pebbles before losing the second round because so many orb monsters appeared. After many rounds, the Pacman master was determined to win. This was the 14th round, and she had had enough. She concocted a plan in physical form that she would follow as she should. When she started the level, she was prepared to win. She followed her plan, and she won. There was no technology problems or level problems, and this was the worst version of the round she had played of this level." In a way, this story could relate to how my semester went, as I had a plan of how I would attend class and finish my homework while working my two jobs. Unfortunately, many family issues had come up which threw a huge break into my plan, but I was determined. I finished my formal assignments on time, and I am working towards having my informal assignments done. Although this has hurt my score, I am determined to master this course. I had to create a plan and write down how I would accomplish my goals in order to follow them, through the advice of Mr. Mangini. I hope by the end of this semester, I will master all of what I tried to all semester long. Authorship and ownership sound pretty similar in their ways. You "author" your writing and you "own" your text. Although it seems that way, there is a challenge with the words itself. Authoring a text would mean that you are writing out your ideas, thoughts, realities through your words. How those words are interpreted after they are written is up to the reader. Even when putting the effort to use language that could try to imitate how the author is personally feeling as he or she is writing their piece; the reader will not understand that text the same way. In that same way, the reader may have an idea that would build off the work(s) of the author and create a new piece. A form that would replicate that theory is fan-fiction or a re-genre project that would build off the works of the author but have a completely different interpretation or a whole new story line altogether. Ownership is a way of claiming the work as their own. When writing, is the idea really owned by you? When the text is complete and read by the individual who did not write it, is their interpretation really owned by them?
Fan-fiction is when a work of an author is recreated in some way that has the idea of the author, but is not the same interpretation as the author. This genre of writing challenges those notions of authorship and ownership through the perception/interpretation of the reader. When viewing authorship and ownership, an example could be "Man in the High Castle." The idea of living in a Communist and Fascist world came from the historical views of Hitler and the Japanese. Even though Hitler and the Japanese came up with a way of ruling the world, another individual came up with a story line for a television show on how that world would look. The story line of the television show does differ in some of the opinions, but it is rather similar. Now, since the idea was originally conceived by Hitler and the Japanese, can the creator of that show take claims on his or her authorship or ownership? Can the creator really say that he or she authored/wrote that show, or that he or she even owns that show? Or is the author and owner of that idea Hitler and the Japanese? Moving forward, that example could apply to the "original" creator of that show, and the fans who wrote fiction that built off of it. Would the fans really own their work if the idea of that show came from the creator, and they only "authored" it? In this way, it sets a diverse complexity as to who really has authorship or ownership over their pieces, especially with the modern day writing diversity. In episode 10 in the Man in the High Castle, it begins with the scene where Frank and Juliana find out about Joe's role in the film. When he comes in, he doesn't understand why they're looking at him. Joe ended up taking the film with him. John has a talk with Helen the night before he is going hunting with Heydrich. He feels like Heydrich may try to kill him or hurt his family, so he wants to make sure everyone is okay. The Japanese find out who killed the Crown Prince, but they do not want to blame the Reich, so they try to find someone that could have the same kind of bullet marks to avoid war. Wegner is returning back to Germany, and before his visit to Hitler, he stops by to see his family one last time. Joe ended up taking the film so that the could tell John of his victories getting the tape and proving himself, but when he goes to the embassy of the Reich, something seems strange. After waiting a while, he figures out that a call was not made to get him home, so he decides to leave back onto Japanese land. John is in a rut with Heydrich as he takes him hostage in a cabin out in the woods with his gun assistant. Lastly, Juliana is faced with the predicament to choose whether she wants to kill Joe and take the film or let him leave on the boat to Mexico. The end results in Ed being taken hostage by the Japanese for the murder of the Crown Prince, Heydrich gets killed by John, Wegner commits suicide when he was trying to kill Hitler, and Juliana lets Joe go to Mexico and not get killed. Tagomi ends up in a universe where he sees himself in a happier Pacific side.
Prediction: In the Man in the High Castle, I chose Joe to elaborate on in what I feel may happen in the next season. We find out that Joe has a child in episode 8, but we also know he has attractions for Juliana. Joe's father is brought up a lot, but we have no idea who he is, so I think we are going to find out who that is, and also I think it may be Hitler due to the fact that John has a special favoritism to Joe even though he commits some crooked acts. Since Hitler is sick, Joe may be in line for the Reich succession but I feel like John is hiding that part so that Joe does not get too carried away or it may go to his head. In addition, Frank could be hiding that to take claims on the Reich position that Hitler has. In Episode 9 in the Man in the High Castle, it begins with Juliana and Joe in a holding place, unfortunately, they are being kept for ransom. The resistance is able to free Juliana, but they do not have enough to get Joe. When Juliana gets out, her and Frank end up hiding at Ed's grandfather's house in order to take the bus to leave to the Neutral zone. John is worried about his son but also has to work about Heydrich who seems to be plotting his kill. When he goes to visit Erich, he sees that he is doing better and is worried about the Reich traitors. When he decides to meet with Connolly, he wants to kill him off, so he staged a suicide off the Reich building. Juliana and the resistance are trying to free Joe from the holding place that the Japanese Kempetai put him in, but they are asking for a higher ransom than they are willing to pay, so Juliana has to use the money that Frank got from his forgery sales to get him out. Finally, they have to come up with a plot to get the film, so Joe threatens the Japanese man that was holding the film and knocked him out before running off. At the end scene, we see Heydrich paying a visit to John's house and talking to the family, meanwhile Frank and Juliana are in shock about what they see on the film. Joe is a Reich member and he is scene shooting Frank in the head.
What If: In this episode, Juliana and Frank are facing the consequences of their actions from episode 8. If Juliana and Frank had decided to leave to the Neutral zone and followed through, they probably would not have been in their stuck situation now. Juliana and Joe are stuck together in a holding place. Since Joe seems to be a traitor to both the Reich and Juliana, it is quite possible that when Juliana comes back for him, he is going to betray her as well. Frank and her may be stuck in the Pacific states permanently because any and all identity checks may be changed, especially with the Japanese trying to pin point a killer for the Crown Prince. John is a strong individual, but could Heydrich actually trap him? If John does make the decision to go with him, there is a chance he could be killed. Not only would this be a brutal loss to his family, but it would also open the doors about Thomas' diagnosis, and Helen may be stuck fending money for her kids while taking care of them. That is if Heydrich doesn't take them down either. Ed is a very supportive friend, and it is sad that he may get in trouble with the enforcement since he is hiding Frank and Juliana at his house. If he is caught, he could possibly be killed. If in episode 8 everyone followed suit, they may not be entangled with the resistance again, and quite possibly Frank and Juliana could have lived normal. lives. In Episode 8 of the Man in the High Castle, it begins with Lem teaching his disabled son how to catch fish. Juliana returns back to her mother to tell her that Trudy is dead, but her mother denies that it is true. Meanwhile Frank ends up finishing the forged antique piece to sell to the Yakuza member in which he partnered up with Mr. Childan to sell. Juliana ends up seeing Joe and he brings up the news about another tape. So when she goes back to the resistance, they deny the help of Joe as he may be a ploy. Meanwhile Juliana is still trying to get information on the Nippon building, including the fact she found out that her stepfather Arnold works there as a head person. On the Reich side, John decides to take Thomas to the doctor as opposed to his wife, Helen, and finds out that Thomas is diagnosed with a form of muscular dystrophy. Later on that day, Heydrich who is a crook amongst the Reich decides to meet with John and leaving him suspicious about the attempted attack from the resistance in Episode 4. He then invites him on a trip to spend time hunting. Just before his work day ends, John receives a call from Joe about his whereabouts on the Pacific side and what he has done to gain access to the new film and spoken with the resistance. We later see John end his day looking in a photo album with a picture of his brother whom happens to have the same muscular dystrophy his son has. Mr. Childan sells the antique piece so that Frank can get some money to run away with Juliana, Meanwhile Juliana and Joe were sent on a plot to claim the new tape for the resistance, luckily, Juliana found out the kempetai were coming to the club that Joe was at to make arrests. The resistance members that sent Joe in did not know about this plot either, so Juliana and Joe were able to make it free with the tape.
In episode 7 of Man in the High Castle, it starts off with Joe after he was caught by John in the office. John confronts him about the truth and then orders him to get dressed so they would leave. Basically it was a set up by John to catch Joe. They then go to the Reich tower and create a plot to use Joe's attraction to Juliana to capture her. Afterwards, they let Joe go to which we find out he has a son and a significant other. Juliana starts her morning off with a call from her stepfather who asks her to come take care of her mother because she is oversleeping lot lately. When she visits her mother, her mother said she felt like Trudy was dead but now that feeling was gone. Mr. Childan, the antique seller gets invited to the Yakuza member's house that he lost as a customer when Frank was at his store. After he enjoys a dinner with them, Frank meets up with him in regards to selling high priced antique products that he can make so that he can make quick money to run off to the Neutral zone with Juliana. Meanwhile Juliana takes a visit to the grave site her sister was dumped at. Joe is forced into making his trek to the Pacific side to find Juliana and take care of her for John, in which the last scene is Joe walking down a path that Juliana is on.
In Episode 6 of the Man in the High Castle, it starts off with Joe who is visiting John and his family at their house for VA Day. After Joe checks out the house, he gets stuck in a game of baseball playing with Thomas. Joe notices that there are secrets John has in his house, but every chance he gets to get to those secrets seems to get him caught. In addition to his attendance at John's house, Rudolph Wegner is also there to visit for VA day. In the family dynamic, we also see that John's wife is taking a barbiturate for either nerves or pain. In the Pacific zone, we see Juliana starts her job at the Nippon building. When she runs into Tagomi, she finds the necklace that she had left back to Frank. After she comes home from work, Frank and her had a discussion which resulted in Frank leaving and attending the Jewish friend's ritual that he does in secrecy to get in touch with his culture. In the meantime, the Japanese are anxious to find out who killed their Crown Prince which results in them visiting the place that Frank bought his bullets. Luckily, there was some false information from the Antique seller. The episode ends with Joe finding the Grasshopper file in John's office and him getting caught by John himself.
Summary:
In episode 5 of The Man in the High Castle, this episode starts off showing the after-effects of the Japanese Prince getting shot. Frank is seen with the gun, but he quickly puts it away and runs, leaving behind the heart necklace he had given to Juliana. He hides the gun under a loading dock and runs back to his apartment to find Ed in a panic. In the meantime, Tagomi is nervous about the visitor checks that have been created because of this incident. Wegner is playing a Swede, when in reality he has a bullet that he was supposed to plant in Kido's pocket. In order to hide his evidence from being found, he swallows the envelope and bullet. Juliana arrives back home, and when she finds Frank, he is ignoring her. She understands that he is not happy, but she does not realize that he has lost some of his family. Frank tells Juliana that her mother stopped by, and that she should go visit her. Upon visiting her parents, which turned out to be brief, Juliana finds out that Frank lost his sister and her children due to the Japanese executing them. She is shocked to find that out, and returns back to Frank to console him. When she returns, Frank is injured and she helps him to remove his bullet, unfortunately, when she asks for their lives to be the same, Frank responds that it won't be the same. Juliana just wants to live a normal life without involvement in the resistance. When Tagomi visits the Crown Princess while she awaits for the news on her husband, she shows unhappiness, to which the doctor alerts them that the Crown Prince is not in good shape. On the Reich's side, Joe has returned back to New York, and just as he gets out of his truck, men kidnap him and bring him to Mr. Smith. Mr. Smith questions Joe about his adventures and so forth and finds it odd that the details about the woman are missing along with the tape. He records the conversation with Joe but ends up believing him, so he decides to invite him to a VA day celebration with his family. Even though Juliana tries to avoid the resistance, she wants to find her sister, which results in her going to the Nippon building to get a job and spy on the Japanese. When Wegner tries to fly back to escape his hotel to fly back to New Berlin, he almost runs into a Nazi agent while Tagomi is trying to avoid Chief Inspector Kido. Frank attends his sister's memorial to which he meets an old Jewish family friend who invites him to spend time. This episode ends with the suspense of Juliana when she has her interview and she has to make a decision based on values and morals. |
